Apollon or Apollo is one of the 12 Olympian Gods. He is the God of Music, poetry, truth, diseases, the Sun and light, healing and prophecies. Lord Apollon was worshipped a lot in ancient Greece and is now also one of the most popular deities for Hellenic polytheists. Lets break down his history.
Apollon's birth history
Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto, one of Zeus' "illegal" women. When Leto was pregnant with Apollon and his twin sister, Artemis, Hera made Leto unable to give birth to any land except Delos, where Leto suffered a gruesome 9 days in labor, because Hera had trapped Eileithyia, the goddess of childbirth, on Olympus, preventing her from aiding Leto. Finally, Goddess Iris freed Eileithyia and Leto succesfully gave birth to the, almost identical, twins Apollon and Artemis.
Apollon's appearance
God Apollon was portrayed as the ideal man with eternal youth. In his sculptures, he was always seen with golden, uncut hair, athletic body and really similar to his sister Artemis. Apollon was almost always holding a laurel branch, a bow (an offer from Hephaestus) and was carrying a quiver of arrows. He could also be depicted with his sacred animals wolves, dolphins, deer, crows, swans. hawks and snakes.
Apollon's love stories
Apollon undoubtedly had a rich histoey of lovers, with many having gruesome endings. The two most famous, however, stand out. The most important love stories for the God are Daphne and his male lover, Hyacinthus. Believe it or not, the ideal man had a male partner!
