A story of teror: the history of nuclear weapons

Since the end of World War II, many countries have built nuclear weapons, creating a world where one mistake could destroy civilization. Despite knowing the dangers, nations continue to keep these weapons. Why?

It all began when the United States dropped the first nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the war, the U.S. promised to get rid of its remaining bombs but didn’t. This was because the Soviet Union (USSR), its rival, had also developed nuclear weapons.

Years later, the USSR broke apart into smaller countries. Many of these countries had nuclear weapons, but Russia, the largest, managed to get most of them to give up their bombs.

Today, even though nuclear weapons are still a threat, there has been progress. The number of warheads has dropped from 70,000 at the height of the Cold War to about 2,500 now. Maybe, someday, the world will finally be free of nuclear weapons and their dangers.
