Chinese Art, Part A

Chinese art has its roots back to the early Stone Age art and throughout the ages it has developed to be characterized by the consistency, variation and signs of tradition it contains as well as the qualities it shares. Some of them are the love of nature, admiration of delicacy and simplicity, an appreciation of caligraphic brushwork, an interest in viewing the subject from various perspectives, and a loyalty to much-used motifs and designs from lotus leaves to dragons. It is also visual art, meaning that it consists of painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking and ceramics.

 Painting

Traditional chinese painting, along with writing, is made by coloring with a brush dipped in ink on paper or silk which are the most used materials. There are also two techniques identified by the detail of the artwork: gong-bi, meticulous in English, the detailed and most precise most commonly used in flower and bird paintings and shui-mo, watercolour , also called ''literati painting'', ''xie yi'' meaning freehand style. The main inspiration for Chinese painting is the landscape, on the one side the rocky environments with rough mountains illustrated with the sharp lines and ink wash whereas. On the other, there are lighter and softer brushstrokes to represent peaceful sceneries with hills and running rivers.

Calligraphy
An art especially appreciated often combined with painting as the same techniques and materials are used in both. However, calligraphy requires elegant and superior brushwork which has various thicknesses, angles and a connection between the letters. It was influenced partly by the need to fill the blank space in paintings and later it evolved to have an explanatory use because it often described the theme and the meaning of it. At first, men were mostly occupied with and expected to be excellent at it. Calligraphy is one of the six classic arts which include ritual, music, archery, charioteering, and numbers.
