Birdwatching

 Birdwatching

Birdwatching (birding) is the observance and study of the behavior and form of birds in their natural habitat. It can be either a type of leisure activity or a citizen science although it is not as formal as ornithology. People first became interested in observing birds a pastime rather than the need of food in the late 18th century. The phrase "bird watching" appeared for the first time in 1901 as the title of the book Bird Watching by Edmund Selous. Ever since the second half of the 20th birdwatching has been gaining in popularity among Scandinavia and English countries.

Big Schools’ Birdwatch, U.K.
If you love birds and wildlife, the Big Schools’ Birdwatch is a great way to encourage the next generation of birders and support important research. Each participating group or class takes an hour to explore their surroundings, identify local birds, and collect data for the RSPB — Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. Using resources provided by the RSPB, educators can choose a time to take their class outdoors and spend an hour counting the birds they see. As the world’s biggest birdwatch, Big Schools’ Birdwatch encourages children to appreciate their local nature, spend time outdoors, and develop their interest in wildlife.

Big Garden Birdwatch, U.K.
Big Garden Birdwatch falls on the last weekend of January every year, and we’re going to show you how you can best observe this year’s watch. Do you know that it has been more than 110 years since the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds R.S.P.B. was created? Big Garden Birdwatch was a project initiated in the United Kingdom that aimed to raise awareness about the protection of endangered species, especially certain birds. Oftentimes, these species are driven out of their natural habitat due to interference from human beings. Big Garden Birdwatch is a wildlife survey organized to motivate everyone to take steps for the protection of these species and their habitat by counting and keeping track of birds in your garden.
