Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin is the first book in the ''Serpent & Dove'' trilogy. Lou is a witch and her life is in danger every minute of the day because witches are burned if they are discovered. The church strongly believes that they are evil creatures of deception, and so, witches are hunted down. But Lou is not hunted only by the church but by her coven too. She steals to live and has not used her magic in ages, fearing she would be discovered. However, Lou knows deep down she can not carry on with such life style because one day her mother will attempt to kill her and she will not have anywhere to hide. But Lou is planning to to steal a ring with powerful magic, making anyone invisible from a landlord whom she has been spying on. So, one night another thief and herself sneaked into the landlord's mansion. Everything was going fine until they heard loud voices from the garden. Chasseurs showed up, looking for the witch they are told will be at the mansion this exact moment. Lou tries to escape but, at the last moment, she is being discovered. Although someone has seen her face, they can not make out whether she is a witch. Her quest is not over. For some time, Lou lies low but a turnover changes her life forever. Lou becomes famous after a unecpected meeting with Reid Diggory, a Chasseur. He has recognized from day one at the mansion. While trying to catch her,  she fell, getting badly injured. As many people saw her, they assumed that the Chasseur had abused her. The church had to take matters in to its own hands. Hence, Lou and Reid are forced to get married because the church's ethical role got in danger. Lou's safety is hanging from a string since she has to live with a chasseur and, if she is not careful, Lou will be discovered. But she will also gain some benefits from that marriage. Her mother is no a threat to her, as she thinks, because Lou has the most safe cover, being the chasseur's wife. However, there is another twist, as Lou realizes she can never be on the safe. Finally she will have to face her mother and the unwanting feelings between herself and Reid.
